LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is a sprawling epic about the adventures of British intelligence officer T.E. Lawrence in the Middle East during World War I. The film is exciting, spectacularly beautiful and, needless to say, was meant to be seen on the big screen. Peter O’Toole is astonishing — his piercing blue eyes and commanding presence highlight one of the most memorable performances of movie history.
About the Score. Director David Lean considered several composers for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, including the Bridge on the River Kwai composer Malcolm Arnold and Broadway legend Richard Rodgers, before hearing French composer Maurice Jarre’s treatment “The Theme from Lawrence of Arabia”. He hired Jarre to write music for the entire film, a score which won one of the film’s seven Academy Awards. LAWRENCE’S strings-heavy work is a playful and sweeping symphony, capturing the grandeur of Lean’s stunning desert vistas. Jarre also cleverly underscores the grandiloquence and ego driving the film’s elusive protagonist, T.E. Lawrence, whose precise motivations fuel the film’s central mystery. Lean and Jarre would work together on other films like Doctor Zhivago and A Passage to India, forming one of cinema’s most significant collaborations between director and composer.
