A Complete Unknownwith Professor Sean Wilentz

2024 2 hr 21 min CC AD

R

On Thursday, January 16 we will be joined by Princeton University professor Sean Wilentz who authored the book Bob Dylan in America, which is a unique look at Dylan’s place in American cultural history through unprecedented access to Dylan’s studio tapes, recording notes, and rare photographs.

Prof. Wilentz discovered Bob Dylan’s music as a teenager growing up in Greenwich Village. Now, almost half a century later, he revisits Dylan’s work with the skills of an eminent American historian as well as the passion of a fan.

Prof. Wilentz will talk about Dylan ahead of the film and do a short Q&A following the screening. He will also be doing a book signing in our lobby prior to the screening with our friends from Labyrinth Books, who will be at the theater selling copies of his book starting at 6:30.

Timothée Chalamet stars as legendary musician Bob Dylan. Primarily set in the early ‘60s in the middle of the New York folk music scene, the film traces the then unknown 19-year-old from obscurity, through his meteoric rise as the preeminent folk singer of the day, and culminating in his rock and roll “coming out” at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Featuring the ever versatile Chalamet actually playing guitar and singing Dylan’s iconic tunes. Also with Elle Fanning and Edward Norton.

Guest Speaker

Sean Wilentz, the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, has taught at Princeton since 1979. His works on American history and politics include The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln (2005), which was awarded the Bancroft Prize and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. More pertinently, he is the author of Bob Dylan in America (2010), a New York Times bestseller. His writings on American music have received two Grammy nominations and two ASCAP-Deems Taylor awards, including his liner notes for Dylan’s Bootleg Series 6: Live 1964, The Concert at Philharmonic Hall. His other notes for Dylan include those for Live at the Gaslight 1962 and Bootleg Series 12: The Cutting Edge, 1965-1966. Along with Greil Marcus, he also co-edited the acclaimed collection, The Rose and the Briar: Love, Death and Liberty in the American Ballad (2004), whose companion CD was released by Sony Legacy. In 2022, the Bob Dylan Center and Archives opened in Tulsa, featuring his permanent exhibition on Dylan’s life and career to date.
